First Days at NYU

Hi all!
I am currently living in NYC!
How did I get here you ask?
Well.
It all started with me applying to three summer publishing programs back in February: NYU, Columbia, and University of Denver.

After a couple weeks, I got accepted by NYU to go to their Summer Publishing Institute. #huzzah

Then I graduated college.

And then I went to Aruba.

And then I flew home from Aruba, landing in DC at 11:30 p.m., drove home, went to bed at 2:00 a.m., woke up at 6:00 a.m., left for Philly with Brent at 7:00 a.m...

got on a bus in Philly for NYC at 10:30 a.m...

and got to NYC at 12:30 p.m.

Following arrival at NYC, I proceeded to freak out, move in to Gramercy Green dorm...

freak out, say goodbye to Brent, freak out, and finally get settled.

The dorm is really nice, with a full kitchen and a freaking touch-screen microwave.

I also lucked into a single room, which I am a big fan of.

(different city, same dorm furniture)

And while I'm only on the second floor I don't have an amazing view of the city, I do have a view!

I go to school pretty much in the financial district in the Woolworth Tower, which is a pretty awesome building.

We have class pretty much 8:30-5:30 straight, mon-fri, many times ending later than scheduled. It's pretty grueling and intensive but we've already had so many smart & important (and young!!) people from the industry talk to us, from magazines like InStyle and Real Simple to Popular Science and Newsweek. We also get magazines before every session for people coming in, so I've accumulated quite a few only one week in.

I've also accumulated one snap bracelet.

There's this great park down the block from Woolworth where I eat lunch almost every day.

It's also the same park that I saw White Collar being filmed. #notbluecollar

In addition to the lectures from people in the industry, the 103 of us in the program are split into 10 groups to start magazine launches, which we worked on all week and are due at the end of the magazine session. We all have roles (I'm the executive editor) and get critiqued throughout the week from people from the industry.

While it can be awfully tiring to sit in the same room for 9-10 hours a day, this program is a pretty amazing opportunity...getting to live in NYC for 6 weeks, having the most important people in the magazine & book industry basically downloading their brains to you, getting to tour places like Time Out New York as well as just being around people who are as passionate about magazines and books as you are is pretty cool. The hours are crazy long and you get so exhausted by the end of each day, but it's been great so far.
